Buying a used car can either be a wise or a foolish move. Someone with no background or knowledge whatsoever on finding a good buy might just be duped into a bad deal and end up with somebody else’s garbage. But for the knowledgeable buyer, a significant amount of money might be saved by settling with a secondhand car.

Here are some tips to set you on the right track.

1. CONSIDER THE KIND OF CAR YOU NEED.

It’s okay to stick to a price range or budget. But first consider the kind of car you be need. Prices vary according to the brand and make of a car. For instance, a small sedan is cheaper, but if you’d pack that car with lots of people or packages, that would cause tearing or breakdown. This would necessitate lots of repair jobs which would mean more expenses for you.

2. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Check out the classifieds for the regular market price ranges on the type of used car that you are going to buy.

3. CHEAP IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST.

Don’t be fooled by the price. Consider the amount of money you will still need to shell out to recondition the used car once you buy it.

4. WHERE TO SCOUT

Private sellers usually sell at a cheaper price. The advantage though of buying from a dealer is that it usually comes with good warranty.

Be bold enough to scout from private sellers if you are confident that you can assess the condition of the used car fairly well. If not, maybe you could bring a mechanic to check out the vehicle.

When opting to buy from used car dealers, be careful not to be taken in by persuasive talk. Don’t take their word for it, check the car yourself.

5. TEST DRIVE BASICS

Be sure to watch out for these:

a. Does the car swerve on either direction? (Also, see if the tires have uneven wear.) If so, it would need a wheel alignment.

b. Is the air cool enough? If not, check if it’s simply a lack of freeon or worse.

c. Are the brakes in good condition?

d. Do you hear unusual sounds? If so, the engine might have problems.

6. INTERIOR CHECKLIST

The condition of the interior gives clue to how much the car has been used and taken cared of. Also, a very low mileage reading on a badly looking interior is a sign of meter tampering.

7. CHECK THE EXTERIOR FOR RUST AND PAINTOVERS.

It might have been in an accident before.

8. CHECK THE GROUND UNDER THE CAR FOR SIGNS OF LEAKAGE.

9. CHECK THE OIL.

Oil should be clear. BLACK colored oil is not a good sign.

10. CHECK THE MUFFLER FOR LEAKS.

A WHITE or BLUE colored emission would be the sign.

The Mazda 3 first hit the market in 2004 and quickly established itself as one of the most fun-to-drive compact cars around, even better than its closest rivals such as the Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sentra and Volkswagen Rabbit. The new Mazda 3 for 2007 has been unveiled as well, with its own hot new updates.

With many of its competitors having redesigned as well, how does the 2007 Mazda 3 compare to its new, souped up competition?

For starters, let’s look at how the Mazda 3 has updated itself both inside and out. The new model has added two new grilles, a squarish housing for its fog lights, new alloy wheels and more aerodynamic bumpers. It looks like the new changes were made with an eye towards greater stability. Gone are the five-spoke alloy wheels from last year’s model, which a lot of people were raving about, but the new wheels aren’t so bad either.

The body also looks more rigid, adding to the greater stability factor, while its suspension was tweaked a bit for better handling and greater steering response.

More good news: the new Mazda 3 still has the same two body styles as before (the four-door sedan and the five-door hatchback) and the same two engine types (the “i” model’s 148 horsepower, two-liter engine and the “s” model’s 156 horsepower, 2.3 liter engine). The three trim levels are back as well — Sport, Touring and Grand Touring, but the latter is only for the “s” model. Select Mazda 3 models also have antilock brakes, and front seat and side-curtain airbags.

The Mazda 3’s interiors also boast of superior new quality. The “i” models come in beige or black interiors while the “s” model comes only in black. Of course, it’s not all black and comes with red and grey plastic trim. In terms of interiors, however, the Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra, seem to have a more modern design.

All Mazda 3 models for 2007 are equipped with stereos with a CD player and a jack for MP3s. Air-conditioners are optional. Power windows, locks and mirrors are available for the Touring and Grand Touring models. The Grand Touring also has leather seats, automatic headlights, climate control and rain-sensing wipers.

The area where the Mazda 3 dominates the competition is in the way it handles on the road. It’s agile, responsive and superior in steering. Try driving it on curvy roads and you can easily spot the difference. CarAndDriver.com ranks the 2007 Mazda 3 as the fourth quickest car of the year, zooming from 0-to-60 miles/hour in 7.3 seconds.

Still is BMW X3 of the best sellers in the SUV segment. Even in the center of the production cycle it is torn Bavaria proper from the hands: Class Primus in the past year, also up-to-date stands the X3 at place 1 the jeep Verkaufscharts. The Spritkonsum holds itself to some extent within limits. According to factory specification the average consumption is about 8,7 litres per 100 of kilometers. With ours on board computer probably calculated vigorous test travels a value of approximately eleven litres.

Dynamically…

In the handling characteristics with the Facelift nothing changed: Still the X3 is with distance agilste and kurvenhungrigste SUV on the market. The razor-sharp steering element and the tautly co-ordinated, wankunempfindliche chassis place in such a way some on sportily trimmed middle class sedan into the shade.
